Dr. Xuefei Ren is an urban sociologist with her work centering around MSU’s signature areas: health, environment, and migration. On health inequality, she is a principal investigator on a project researching the COVID-19 pandemic’s effect on vulnerable neighborhoods in three different countries. She has published an abundance on air pollution in China and India and environmental governance. Dr. Xuefei Ren has also been actively analyzing migrants in China and their rights to housing.
She is the author of three award-winning books: “Governing the Urban in China and India: Land Grabs, Slum Clearance, and the War on Air Pollution” (Princeton University Press, 2020), “Urban China” (Polity, 2013), and “Building Globalization: Transnational Architecture Production in Urban China” (University of Chicago Press, 2011). She is actively a Public Intellectual Fellow of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (2021-2023), with her published commentaries in the Guardian, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and others. Her work has been supported by a plethora of reputable organizations: Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Andrew Mellon Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Urban Studies Foundation, etc.
