During this Happy Hour, Professor Wang will discuss his book manuscript titled “Social Origins of Durable Rule in Imperial China,” which examines China’s long-term state development.

Frederick S. Danziger Associate Professor of Government at Harvard University

Yuhua Wang is associate professor in the Department of Government at Harvard University. His research focuses on two political aspects of state-building: 1) What contributes to the emergence of effective and durable statehood? and 2) After an effective state emerges, how can it be constrained? Professor Wang is the author of Tying the Autocrat’s Hands: The Rise of the Rule of Law in China (Cambridge University Press, 2015). He received his B.A. and M.A. from Peking University and his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan. From 2011 to 2015, he was assistant professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania.
